Neil Lennon says players’ inconsistency behind Huddersfield defeat not tactics

Neil Lennon maintains his tactical approach was not to blame for Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to relegation rivals Huddersfield Town.

Wanderers came crashing back down to earth following last week’s derby win against Blackburn Rovers, with their second-half display against the Terriers coming in for stinging criticism from supporters.

After dominating the first 20 minutes the Whites failed to adapt to their opponents’ fluid front line and appeared to run out of steam completely in the last half hour as goals from Joe Lolley and Mustapha Carayol wrapped up the points.

Lennon, whose own position has consistently come under scrutiny in the last couple of months, insisted he and his coaching staff could have done no more to earn a result.

“There are times when I look at myself and ask ‘did I do enough today?’ But this time the preparation was good and the way we set up was good. We are doing all we can as a backroom team,” he told The Bolton News.

“It was working. We got them in at half time and decided to tweak it a little bit but they couldn’t get to grips with it so we went back to the original formation.

“You can talk about formations all you want it’s about players at the end of the day.

“We analyse teams and do everything we can but the difficulty is that we can’t add to the squad and we might lose players as well. It’s going to get tougher.”

Lennon blames inconsistency for Wanderers’ wretched season so far and hinted at his frustration with a pointed comment after the final whistle.

“Maybe some players are at their level, others are playing above their level, and there are some that are good enough to play at this level but are not playing well enough – on that evidence at least.”

Wanderers loaned out Lawrie Wilson to Peterborough United on Saturday, although Lennon conceded the deal was not specifically designed to save money.

“Financially it’s only for 28 days but Lawrie will get more football out of it as well, so it’s a bit of both,” he added.

Lennon signed Wilson on a free transfer in the summer after his release from Charlton Athletic but he has been frozen out of the side since September’s 4-1 defeat against Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium.

He made his debut for the Posh as a half-time substitute in their 3-2 win at Sheffield United.
