It is true Hendrix played the Odeon and Dusty Springfield was on the same bill.
At BIT I've seen Hawkwind(complete with Lemmy), Curved Air, Arthur Brown and Vinegar Joe (Elkie Brooks and Robert Palmer were in this band).
Fairport Convention appeared at the Albert Hall many years ago and a popular band at the time Camel.
I do know that Joy Division performed at BIT in their pomp.
One abortive trip to BTC on Manchester Rd involved a full house if I remember correctly around 72, and the band failed to turn up, Thin Lizzy.
Bolton has always lived in the shadow of Manchester musically however but the Odeon would have made a great venue as it was like it's former cinema sister inside, Manchester Apollo, however bingo took over after flicks finished.

Vinegar Joe were a brilliant band to see live but Elkie Brooks became a shadow of her former self when she came out with all that Lilac Wine-style shit.

This could possibly be the concert you went to.

I was a BIT regular and went to all the aforementioned and many other gigs there. One of my favourites was Mike Absalom who misjudged a minor explosion effect in a beer keg whilst performing Hector the dope-sniffing hound and knocked out a load of ceiling tiles.

There were many small venues around Bolton. The former cinema behind Castle on Crompton Way used to do a fair few and one in particular I remember was Van der Graaf, Steamhammer and Trapeze on the same bill. I remember a "festival" in Moss Bank Park with (the Bolton) Iron Maiden who gigged all over town. Mostly it was pubs and small clubs though.

Was it called BIHE on the other side of town where they used to put on concerts as well? I seem to recall going there to see a band called Mirrors Over Kiev, who came from Bolton I think. Also at the same venue, an end-of-career Desmond Dekker with an audience of about seven people. He finished up just wandering around chatting to everyone.

BIHE/BIT is now the University, i went to a couple of gigs there but i think it had its heyday back in the 70's and 80's

BIT or The Tech is now long gone.

Demolished a couple of years ago.

Where the university is now was formerly Bolton Institute of Technology (BIT) and Bolton Technical College was BTC on Manny Road where you went to take your 11 plus 2nd part and walked past to see the "Burnden Aces"!

I stand corrected.

The "technology" bit threw me because it was known as BIHE when I knew it and I always though "The Tech" was the one on Manchester Rd.

It later changed to Bolton Institute of Higher Education, BIHE, when they started to shift courses from BTC if I remember correctly and build up to University status and the closing at Manny Road ultimately.
As an add on BIT in the 70's was considered a very "high" place of learning on the technical side, particularly all the Engineering fields, and given I attended other places of learning on occasional training courses, the standards of equipment, etc, never seemed to be as good as BIT.
