Neil Lennon would walk away from the job at Wanderers if he thought the task of saving them from relegation was hopeless, says Steve Walford.

Saturday’s defeat at Nottingham Forest came as another body blow for the manager, who is now coming in for increasing criticism from supporters for his role in the club’s downfall on the pitch.

But his right-hand man Walford insists none of the coaching staff have thrown in the towel despite a seven-point gap to safety.

“If we didn’t think we could do it we’d just get up and go and say ‘we can’t do this’. You’ve got to believe.

“I do believe. Every game we go into it I believe we can win it.

“Everyone has self-doubt when you lose football matches. You just try and do the things that made you successful in the first place.

“You can’t legislate for individual errors that cost us goals. You can’t legislate for refereeing errors that cost us goals. We just have to get on with it.

“You have to stop making individual errors and we might have a chance of winning games.”

Walford admits the threat of losing players this month does make the job more difficult but he argued that Lennon has been dealing in diminishing returns since the day he walked into the Macron.

“When Neil came to the club last season they were down at the bottom,” he said. “He took over a struggling team, reduced the squad and got rid of so-called better players, replacing them with those on less money.

“We struggled then with a better team that we’ve got this year. It will be a struggle and we knew it would.

“If we lose players, we lose players. We’ve just to get on with our jobs. It’s a situation we just have to deal with and not really pay too much attention to.

“We nearly lost Mark Davies last week but you just get on with it. I’m sure there will be interest in our players from other teams because we’ve got some decent players.”

Where does Walford stand on 5 wins in 56 games? that's not just relegation form, it's verging on criminal in the sense that Lennon is imitating a football manager, they certainly are a deluded set of clowns if they think they can claim to have a plan of escape, that ship sailed long ago, face it all the management team are inept and clueless.
