Shola Ameobi will be asked to play to the final hours of his Bolton Wanderers contract this weekend.

The veteran striker’s contract runs out on Saturday and he has been told another deal is highly unlikely given the club’s financial problems.

Tuesday night’s FA Cup replay against Eastleigh had been expected to be his last outing but with injury problems mounting up, Neil Lennon will be forced to play Ameobi on Saturday despite knowing he will have to leave the club after the final whistle.

Gary Madine walked off the pitch – effectively substituting himself – in the 3-2 win against the non-leaguers, and Lennon said he was now a big doubt to face MK Dons.

Ameobi could be the only fit senior striker available with Emile Heskey still a week off returning from a calf problem and Zach Clough still nursing a hip strain.

“Injuries are stacking up so Shola has got a good chance of playing Saturday, put it that way,” Lennon said. “I thought he was good when he came on.”

On Madine, the manager added: “He’s got a groin strain and he’s been struggling for a while but we asked him to play (against Eastleigh). We’ll see what the walking wounded are like come Thursday.”
