Swansea City are hoping Wanderers lower their valuation of young stars Zach Clough and Josh Vela towards the end of the transfer window.
The Premier League club are keeping tabs on the academy graduates after bulking at the Whites’ original asking price a fortnight ago.
It is understood Swansea were rebuffed with their initial offer of £2million for the pair and have now stepped back from the deal.
With six days left to go before the deadline there are suggestions the Swans will look to make a second bid, particularly now that Francesco Guidolin has been installed as their new head coach and is looking to freshen up his squad.
Clough has already turned down a £2m move to Bristol City in the current window, which could have risen to £3m depending on appearances, while Vela’s £500,000 transfer to Cardiff City never materialised after the Welsh club were placed under an embargo.
Wanderers are still in the process of confirming the sale of the North Stand car park, which will raise some short-term funding, but Neil Lennon has been warned he will almost certainly lose some first-team players over the next six days.
The club is ideally looking to move on some of their bigger earners first but have struggled to offload any of their players in the window so far, as rival clubs struggle to match the wages that have been handed out in the past few seasons.
Both Preston North End and Charlton Athletic are unable to match Liam Feeney’s current salary at the Macron, while sources at Ipswich Town have played down the club’s chances of signing Darren Pratley, also citing financial reasons.
Mark Davies also struggled to agree terms with Sheffield Wednesday, with Wanderers facing the prospect of paying off his remaining contract to sweeten the deal for the Owls.
But after that transfer broke down in controversial circumstances, the midfielder’s representatives claimed he wanted to remain at Bolton until the end of the season.
