Neil Lennon spoke to the media following Bolton’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton at the weekend. Below is what the manager had to say on a number of key points after the match.

On the result of the game…
I think it hinged on two key moments in the second half. David Stockdale pulled off a brilliant save from Liam Feeney and a moment of madness from us for their third goal. We lost the ball in a key area and were punished for it. We can’t be doing that at this level. Coming into the game nobody really gave us a chance, but I didn’t think there was much in the game.

On the players’ performance…
I can’t criticise them too much. It was always going to be a difficult game and I thought we played very well for the large part of the game. We came back twice from being a goal down and in the end we’ve lost the game. I thought we looked a good side and that we played with a lot of cohesion, which makes the result all the more frustrating.

On the Brighton goals…
We will always look at goals we conceded and analyse them, but today I thought they were poor and that we shot ourselves in the foot. The pass for the first goal should have been cut out. I’m not quite sure why that didn’t happen. The second goal is a break away and we got caught in possession for the third goal.

On the 63rd minute applause for Phil Gartside…
It has been a difficult week, but both sets of fans inside the stadium showed a real touch of class today. The applause is thoroughly merited for a great football man.

On Rob Holding’s performance…
I thought he was once again superb. He’s looking like a real talent and plays without any fear. He wants to drive the side forward from the back which is what we need right now.

On Beram Kayal’s performance…
He’s obviously someone I know very well and he’s not the first one of my former players to come back to haunt me this season. He’s a good player and a very good signing for Brighton.

On other results in the league…
They haven’t gone for us today, but there is still a lot of football to be played. We’ve been in decent form in the last few weeks and we still believe we can get out of the position we’re in.
