In the numerous offices I have personally worked, putting the phone down to a rude customer and immediately bitching about them was just normal and generally acceptable practice. I include a John Lewis call centre in that.
I once worked in a solicitors office where this one 40something Iranian chap in my team was nice as pie to everyone on the phone, but usually the minute they hung up, he'd slam the handset down and mutter "cocksucker".
I'm not saying the place I currently work stands firmly against that sort of behavior, I just sense that it's "not cool". For example, I had to chase a document the other day but ended up talking instead to some know-it-all receptionist who just told me to ring back some other time. When I put the phone down and called him a knobhead, instead of getting sympathy, I just got looks.
I feel quite strongly that you just have to be able to vent like this sometimes, even if it means you're badmouthing the people that bring the money in. As long as they don't find out, who the hell cares?
Are you very careful not to call people like this at work, or do you too need a moment here and there to say it how it is?
