What gloswhite is asking is why do we need somebody with League One experience as opposed to Championship experience or even PL experience.

Are the rules different in League One? Is it 8 a side?

But more to the point, how many managers get brought to clubs because they so called "know this league", and end up making a complete mess anyway? Just look at Adkins, twice got clubs promoted from League One - probably just the sort of experience you're going on about - yet clearly doing a crappy job at Sheff Utd.

Let's be honest, people bang on about experience, but it's just verbal diarrhoea.

You utter gobshite.

It's about knowing the players in League 1 and 2. The players that few people have heard of but you know they can do a job at that level.

Wouldn't be too keen on Steve Claridge. Knowing what you're talking about on tv and putting ideas into practice on the pitch are two different things, plus the players would probably fall asleep during his team talk.

Gary Neville is in much the same boat I suppose. Comes across well on tv and seems knowledgeable and having a manager like Alex Ferguson his whole career means he learnt from one of the very best. His time at Valencia turned out to be a bit of a train wreck but in his defence, going straight into one of the four biggest clubs in Spain without any experience and without any knowledge of the language was always going to be a big ask.

So we can only attract decent players from League 1 and 2 clubs if we have a manager who's worked at those levels before?

No, but on our budget it will be the players that aren't universally known to be "decent" that will end up here. An experienced lower league manager will have a better chance of sussing out the ones who might be half decent.

Stop fooking arguing anyway, Lennon has already proved my point. No experience of Championship football and has bought donkey after donkey.

It is true that a manager who has spent lots of time in the bottom two divisions will have seen lower league players week in week out and should know first hand what players can do a job rather than relying on scout reports and a few handpicked match tapes. Having experience of the lower leagues is a definite plus imo.

No but the type of football played in the lower reaches is very different. It takes a lot more in terms of skill than people might think to get promoted from there but it mostly takes a lot of fight and the tackling is much harder. There's a different sort of mindset that you just don't see in the top two divisions, much less in the way of diving etc and referees tend to be more lenient towards defenders. In some ways League One is what division two used to be like in the pre-premiership era. It's got some nice football but it's mostly about who wants the win most. Managers who are used to seeing flair players get a penalty because they tripped over a long blade of grass don't tend to do well down there while those who are into grit and strength do.

Oddly enough L1 is probably made to order for a Megson type manager, one who wants a rock solid defence that never concedes and a team that nicks wins on the break. I'm not saying there is no skill at all, far from it but the sort of tiki-taka stuff that the upper reaches like Barca and Bayern play just doesn't work down here. It's an older fashioned sort of football and it needs a manager who knows when and how to mix the physical and skill sides of the game in a different way to those of the top two tiers.

Makes sense to me ..... here my bottom three next season in league one ....Barca, Bayern and Bolton .....all with too much skill to play in league one. jocolor

We need a manager with a decent scouting network, because our budget will probably be only able to stretch to non league players.

If you're a League One/Two manager, the only players you see week in week out are your own. The rest, two matches a season at best.

It's not exactly a great approach to recruiting a manager is it? Identify one or two leagues in the whole world that we ought to buy players from, then pick some guy on the basis that he happens to have managed in those leagues before.

Any decent manager given the right backing in terms of scouts has the capacity to bring in decent obscure players from all over.

What was the deal in the Todd days anyway? I don't think he'd ever managed in the Danish league incidentally...

In all fairness, you could be right Doff, but now is probably not the time to be taking a punt on another maybe. Let's face it, no one of premiership standard will want to come and more to the point we can't afford them. Chances are a manager with lower league experience would fail anyway but at this point I would think it's a safer bet.
