Jimmy Phillips believes Brentford’s desire to play passing football may just suit his own team at Griffin Park tonight.
With several youngsters in his team and a diminutive frontline of Zach Clough and Kaiyne Woolery likely to again get the nod to start, the interim Wanderers boss concedes the physical side of the game can make life difficult.
But having done his homework on the Bees and how they play, Phillips is hopeful of a more positive outcome than in his first two games since stepping into the manager’s hot seat at the Macron.
He told The Bolton News: “Brentford are a team that play a lot football – we saw that when they played at the Macron earlier in the season.
“They look to play out from the back and through midfield at every opportunity.
“So it certainly will be a game of football as opposed to a more physical battle.
“It may suit us more but it is how we adapt to that and make sure we work hard but play our football when we get the chance.
“That is what we have to drum into the players.”
While Wanderers were hit by a late sucker-punch in their home defeat to Reading, Brentford ended a run of four straight defeats with a 3-0 victory at managerless Nottingham Forest.
However, they have won just one of their last nine on home soil and Phillips is drilling into his team to strike a balance between solid defending and making the most of their chances at the opposite end.
He said: “Brentford will be confident after Saturday’s result and they are a team who can score goals.
“We need to make sure we are difficult to beat but also show what we can do when we get on the ball.
“I didn’t feel we did that as much as we can do on Saturday.”
