Jimmy Phillips spoke to the media following Bolton Wanderers’ 0-0 draw with Charlton Athletic at Macron Stadium.
In a game of few chances, David Wheater forced Charlton goalkeeper Nick Pope into the game’s only meaningful save with a powerful header from a corner.
As both sides drew a blank, the solitary point cemented Charlton’s place in the relegation zone alongside Wanderers, with both sides set to face each other in Sky Bet League One next season.
Phillips covered the below points in his post-match press conference.
On the result...
We played a team who needed to win to have any chance of staying in the league. The positive for us is that they didn’t find a way through, though the quality of the game was extremely disappointing. The downside was that we weren’t very creative ourselves and we know that we have better than what we are showing right now.
On Oscar Threlkeld’s performance…
I thought he was our best player. He’s been back at the club for a week or so now following his loan spell at Plymouth and you can see that he’s benefited from that. He created our best chance of the match when he flashed a ball across the face of goal that Darren Pratley nearly connected with. Oscar’s performance was pleasing and I thought he looked hungry and fit.
On the lack of goalscoring chances…
I felt we looked the more likely in front of goal, but there wasn’t much to go at to be fair. I know we are capable of a lot more positive football than we have seen tonight. We have far more ability on the ball than we are showing and that is something we’re continuing to work on to try and get that out of the players.
On the games ahead…
It’s as you were in terms of coaching and managing the team. We’ll keep doing as we are doing and giving our best for the club ahead of the next game against Cardiff.
On club’s current situation…
We still have a lot of players contracted to the club next season, so it is important we continue giving it a go. Players are playing for their futures and there’s a lot of sorting out to be done in the summer.
