With Wanderers bringing the curtain down on their exploits at Macron Stadium for 2015/16 with victory over Hull City on Saturday afternoon, David Wheater praised the team’s endeavour to dig in and leave the game against the play-off bound Tigers with maximum points.
In a tightly contested game at BL6, the Whites drew first blood in the 65th minute of the clash as substitute Stephen Dobbie drilled home from 12 yards out – a goal which prove decisive at the final whistle.
And speaking to bwfc.co.uk following the final whistle, the defender admitted his delight at being able to put smiles on faces of the Bolton faithful.
“You could see at the end how much the win meant to the fans and it meant a lot to us too,” he said. “I’m sure that they can see we’ve been trying hard all season long, but ultimately it’s just been too many last minute goals when we’ve been on top in games and things not going our way.
“Today though, we defended well and Dobs did well to get his goal from the bench – that’s exactly what you want from your substitutes. It was a team effort and the fans were brilliant all the way through.
“He does that in training every day because he’s a top player and he will always score goals when he gets in the right positions.”
Reflecting upon his recent partnership with Player of the Year winner Rob Holding in the heart of defence, the 29-year-old praised the academy graduate for his maturity throughout a difficult period for the club.
“You take time to gel with your partners, but since me and Rob have worked together from the game at Bristol City, it’s been really good and we know how each other plays.
“When you get games together though, it helps and Rob is a top player. He can be a top player and he’s been terrific since he came into the team around Christmas time. I believe he’s someone who will go right to the top throughout his career.”
He added: “Next season, a lot of younger players will be called upon – George Newell did well today on his debut and he’s got a good background with his dad, so he’s definitely got a bright future ahead of him.”
Finally looking forward to the Whites’ last game of the season away at Fulham next weekend, Wheater said, “Hopefully, we can get that monkey off our backs with an away win at Fulham next week.
“We’ve not had nearly as many wins as we would have liked this season, but it’s not been through want of trying.
“To get the win today though was fantastic and hopefully we can go to Fulham and get that victory for the fans because they deserve it.”
