Wanderers may offer Jay Spearing a surprise chance to stay at the Macron next season.

Positive talks have been held between the former club captain, his representatives and co-owner Ken Anderson this week, with the 26-year-old indicating he wanted to stay and fight for the Whites.

Spearing has a year left to run on his contract but The Bolton News understands the £100,000 clause limiting the number of games he can play, which has left him in limbo since March, will not apply in League One next season.

Anderson has met with several high-earning players in the last few days to discuss their options after relegation.

A widespread clear-out had been predicted over the summer with the likes of Ben Amos, Mark Davies and Darren Pratley tied to the wage bill for next season.

But it has been indicated by the club they are not under pressure to completely clear the decks and will retain some bigger salaries in key positions to ensure the most competitive squad possible next term.

Talks have already begun with at least two Premier League clubs about loans next season, which have to run from window to window because of rule changes in the Football League.

But news Wanderers are not under financial pressure to push all of their contracted players out on permanent or loan moves has come as a welcome surprise.

Spearing was sidelined through no fault of his own soon after the takeover when a six-figure sum owed to his former club Liverpool emerged just 24 hours before a home game against Preston North End.

Attempts to negotiate a deferral with the Premier League club failed as did attempts to send Spearing out on loan before the close of the window.

The midfielder has continued to train with the Whites, earning high praise for his attitude from Jimmy Phillips, and is known to be settled in the area with his young family.

Before being shelved Spearing had made 23 appearances and scored two goals.

Wanderers travel to Fulham for the final game of the season today followed by 1,100 travelling supporters.

Derik Osede is keen to send the fans off for the summer on a positive note after months of turmoil on and off the pitch.

“It has been a bad season for the club and the supporters,” he told The Bolton News. “But we must look forward and if we win at Fulham it will show what we want to do from now on.

“Fans have given us a lot and we feel we owe them something back. Hopefully we can do that next season.”
