Phil Parkinson has warned Wanderers: 'Don’t feel sorry for yourselves'.
With 36 days to go before the season kicks off at home to Sheffield United, the Whites boss has laid down the law to his troops in a tough week of double sessions on the training pitches at Lostock.
That workload will increase when they fly out to Sweden tomorrow for an intense training camp, which concludes with a game against Danish side Helsingor.
Wanderers vastly under-achieved in the Championship last season but the new boss has told his players to forget all about relegation and focus squarely on life in League One.
“We have explained to the lads that it’s time to draw a line under last season,” he told The Bolton News. “We cannot, under any circumstances, allow that to fester in anyone’s minds at all.
“This is a fresh start for everyone and there is enough time between now and the start of the season for players to develop a new mindset and be the competitive team we want.”
Parkinson set down five key points for his players to achieve in pre-season, which will include five games on English soil including home matches against Lancashire rivals Burnley and Preston North End.
“I’ve got targets,” he said. “One is to get an identity for the team, a structure, two is to be organised and detailed in our preparation, three is to be able to have a team that can pass the ball but also penetrate and produce chances, crosses etc.
"The other key element is to be fit because you have to have a team willing to out-run the opposition. You can’t always be great in every game.
"Finally, I want to galvanise the spirit within the team – they are the aims over the next six weeks.”
Chris Taylor looks set to become Wanderers’ first signing of the summer after he had a medical at the club yesterday.
Although confirmation of the signing had not come through by the time The Bolton News went to press, the former Blackburn Rovers and Oldham Athletic midfielder looks certain to be the first permanent arrival in nine-and-a-half months, the last being goalkeeper Paul Rachubka.
Paperwork was being blamed for the delay last night but Taylor should pave the way for a second new arrival, striker Jamie Proctor, before the squad fly out to Scandinavia.
