Phil Parkinson will speak with chairman Ken Anderson today to discuss how they can build on an excellent start to pre-season.

Wanderers started as they mean to go on with victory over Helsingor on Saturday with all three summer signings – Mark Beevers, Chris Taylor and Jamie Proctor – on show.

Parkinson accepts his squad is still a work in progress, however, and with a goalkeeper and wingers next on the agenda he is looking to push on with his recruitment drive.

“I’ll go back and meet the chairman on Monday, give him a review of how the week has gone, and give him a bit more on what I feel we need to work towards in the next few weeks,” he told The Bolton News.

“We are still wide players short, real natural width, and we are trying to add to that. Some more pace out wide would certainly help.”

Much could depend on Rob Holding’s immediate future and when – or if – his proposed move to Arsenal goes ahead.

The England Under-21 international sat out at the weekend as a precautionary measure with a minor hamstring problem and was quickly joined by Derik Osede, who also pulled up with a similar twinge.

“Neither are big issues,” said the manager. “But at this stage of pre-season we won’t be taking any risks at all.”

Wanderers’ squad flew back yesterday afternoon with Parkinson feeling he knows more about the squad he has to work with in the coming months.

“It has been an excellent week, I really enjoyed it,” he said.

“Getting the lads together so we can watch them properly has been really good for us. We watched a lot of DVDs and clips of individuals, listened to reports and opinions, but working with them on a day-to-day basis has been really beneficial.

“We have learned more in a game situation. Some things have been confirmed, some we have gained a bit more info, but that’s what the job is about – getting a team out on that pitch that our supporters turn up believing will win a game of football.”

Wanderers return to the training ground tomorrow with the manager looking to increase the workload when they travel to Field Mill on Saturday.

“We’ll step it up now and get ready for a good week,” he said. “The intensity levels will go up now and take us into the game at Mansfield.”
