Phil Parkinson won’t make predictions on how his Wanderers side will fare in League One until he is happy with the balance of his squad.
The Whites boss feels he needs three or four new signings to be fully equipped for the new season ahead.
He will meet with chairman Ken Anderson today to discuss what, if any, windfall he will receive from Rob Holding’s £2million move to Arsenal to help his rebuild efforts.
Neal Eardley, David Wheater and Danny Collins are among the out-of-contract players training with the club at present and it is believed Parkinson is keen to sort out whether they will be offered a permanent deal or not.
Asked whether he is targeting a top-six finish, Parkinson says he is holding off on any forecasts until he knows exactly what players he has at his disposal.
“I’ll let you know when I have got my squad together,” he told The Bolton News. “To predict at this stage when the squad is still three or four players short of where we want it to be would be difficult.
“If we can get the players in we want then I think we’ve got quality in here to do all right but we’re not quite there yet.
“You’ve seen the energy, the tackling, the competitive instinct is starting to come back, the mentality is improving.”
Parkinson believes confidence within the camp is starting to repair itself after last season’s relegation but that a “complete cure” will only be possible with a few new signings.
“I look around and see some very good players in this squad, some of whom needed lifting when I came in,” he said.
“Equally, am I happy at this stage? No, because I don’t think it’s ready yet.
“A lot of managers will feel the same way and feel some positions are stronger than others. I knew where we were when I came in with regard to the Rob Holding situation but Ken is coming up on Tuesday and I need to sit down with him and start getting some things over the line quicker.
“I am pleased with the work we have done so far but also know we can’t afford to stop here.”
Tickets for tonight’s home friendly against Burnley are available for £10 adults and £5 concessions.
