Two new signings, Adam King from Swansea and ROI striker Simon Cox start for them though, but I'm more interested in Anderson making a positive start to his Wanderers career. Chuffed he's starting and hopefully he'll build a good partnership with Madine.

BBC saying we managed 23 attempts with 3 on target.
Still excited about this team's potential though and delighted Anderson opened his account - what a record he's got!

Should be dismantling teams like that, especially at home.

Totally agree.

Poor result, little discipline, sloppy defence, too many chances thrown away.

Should be hammering midtable teams at home.

Hopefully when the new lads settle in we should be able to put another good run together.

Still unbeaten and top of the league though.

3 out of 23 tells it's own story but I'm hoping that Anderson will provide the accuracy and killer instinct up front when he settles in. However at 5'9" I don't think it helps if every cross is lumped into the box.

I was wondering if as a result of us dominating possession and playing higher up the park, there was no space behind to exploit his speed? 

Lots of positives though especially creating so many chances.

Note of caution though: Just watched their goal a couple of times again and Kyprianou had acres of space with Buxton ball watching. Add to that Beevers' lazy backpass and we could have conceded again from dodgy defending so if we are compressing play in their half we need to keep concentrating at the back. I guess our defenders are not used to having so much inactivity so that's something else to work on.

Also thought Anderson's goal was legit as he didn't seem to make much if any contact with Smith who appeared to drop the ball on to Anderson's head.

Early days, but although the result wasn't what we wanted, the performances were generally encouraging and I'm optimistic about our chances of promotion.

Unlucky not to have got all three points today, liked the look of Henry and Ameobi had some good touches when he came on. Anderson was quiet and looked better when he dropped deeper in the second half and I thought Proctor was much more effective when brought on for Madine.

Best performance of the season without the result it deserved, the chances we made where not clear cut but we looked much better going forward than in previous games.

Best home performance today, yet the worst result so far. lots of positives all the new guys added value to the team, we actually had movement and passed the ball well.

The downside we started slowly again need to get on the front foot from the off, gave away a sloppy goal Buxton was drawn out of position. Two many attempts off target.

But that's the best we have played at home, much to be pleased about

I wonder what Whittam's response is going to be.

It'll either be a scathing attack on those people who aren't getting carried away and jumping up and down, shouting about promotion being nailed on, laced with comments about "still being unbeaten" and "top of the league" or it'll be an attack on the "useless ponce players" for not dispatching Southend with consummate ease.

Report: Bolton Wanderers 1-1 Southend United

OVERVIEW

Wanderers’ unbeaten start to life in Sky Bet League One continued as they played out a 1-1 draw with Southend United at Macron Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was the visitors who broke the deadlock inside three minutes, with Harry Kyprianou slamming home from six yards out, but the Whites were back level in the 48th minute as Keshi Anderson notched a debut strike for the club.

It was all Bolton for the remainder of the second period, with Jay Spearing seeing a free-kick tipped over the bar amongst other chances for the Trotters, but they were ultimately forced to settle for just the solitary point come full time.

TEAM NEWS

It was full debuts for recent signings James Henry and Keshi Anderson who were included from the off, while other deadline day acquisitions Ben Alnwick, Sammy Ameobi and Tom Thorpe took their places amongst the substitutes. 

FIRST HALF

Wanderers started strongly as the rain fell at Macron Stadium, with Henry seeing an audacious half volley from 20 yards narrowly clear the crossbar inside three minutes.

Out of nowhere however, the visitors took the lead through Kyprianou who thundered home from six yards out after collecting a John White cross into the mix.

Boosted by their early opener, the Shrimpers then proceeded to enjoy a period of pressure inside Bolton’s third of the pitch with Wanderers forced on the backfoot following a positive start.

The equaliser looked to have arrived in the eighth minute as David Wheater nodded goalbound, but Anderson somehow blocked his teammate’s effort on the line with keeper Ted Smith in no man’s land.

After a spurt of possession, the visitors were very much under the cosh with Jay Spearing seeing a shot from all of 25 yards fly just wide of the goalmouth halfway through the first period.

Gary Madine was certainly proving himself a handful too, with the big frontman seeing two headers fall narrowly off target.

A goalmouth scramble ensued in Southend’s penalty area shortly after the half hour mark, with shot-stopper Smith in all sorts of trouble as neither Anderson nor Madine could turn a loose ball home.

Madine himself was in the mix once again with ten minutes of the half to go, but the referee was unmoved by his claims for a penalty after his legs were seemingly taken from beneath him.

As the clock ran down to half time, it was pretty much one way traffic from Wanderers with Liam Trotter seeing his point-blank range shot from Vela’s cross somehow kept out of the goalmouth, but the Whites remained behind at the break.

SECOND HALF

As the second half got underway, it was clear to see that Bolton were a team on a mission and they were rewarded just three minutes in as Anderson managed to force the ball home after the goalkeeper had dropped it near to the goalmouth.

Completely deserved given the Whites dominance, they continued to pile forward, clearly not happy to rest on their laurels.

Anderson was right in the thick of it for the home side, with much of the Trotters’ attacking intent coming via the forward.

Southend were virtually camped in their own penalty area, with Bolton relentless in their pressure as they looked to take the lead in the clash.

Crosses into the box were aplenty for Bolton, with Ryan Leonard clearing an effort off the line with 20 minutes of the game remaining after carnage in the area from a long throw-in.

Having failed to trouble Wanderers all half however, the Shrimpers were nearly gifted the lead after a short back-pass from Wheater was snatched up by David Mooney, but Mark Howard was on his toes to block his way with Mark Beevers eventually hacking the ball clear.

Phil Parkinson then proceeded to hand a debut to Sammy Ameobi with eleven minutes remaining, with the wideman replacing Henry and immediately winning a free-kick in dangerous territory.

A set-piece which Smith somehow tipped over the bar from Spearing, it was a glorious opportunity for the Whites to take the lead.

The visitors were hanging in there as the minutes ticked away, with the Shrimpers defending in their droves inside the final stages of the encounter as substitute Andrew Taylor poked an effort agonisingly wide of the post in the last minute of the 90.

With three minutes of additional time indicated, it was all hands to the pump for Wanderers as they looked for a winner, but it just didn’t fall for Parkinson’s men as they had to settle for a share of the spoils at the final whistle.

I've had a fair few frustrating afternoons watching Wanderers and today was right up there, could have given a second gift of a goal away in the second half as well. Build up play good for most of the game but despite changing up a gear second half couldn't finish or find the final ball. Anderson, Henry and Ameobi looked good and Spearing, Trotter and Vela had decent games also.

Some people are easily pleased. All very nice until we got into the box, then it was the same old pisspoor finishing.

Why can't professional footballers put away chances a schoolboy would put away on Adlington Rec?

I find that performance more encouraging than the other two home matches which we somehow won.

I enjoyed the football a lot more even though once again we didn't create that many big chances.

The new signings definitely make things more interesting. It feels like we have a few options now, as opposed to a load of automatic choices.

I feel Proctor gives us a lot more than Madine when he comes on.

We created plenty of chances but shite finishing, good job Anderson didn't give up on that chance,
new signings look promising, Moxey had another mare

Well if that's the sort of football that Phil Brown serves up we definitely dodged a bullet!!

we should have won, we had the majority of the ball and created loads but as ever the finishing let us down.
Not impressed with either fullback, Moxey is shite as we know and Buxton wasn't much better. If we are going to play this diamond formation with no width we need the full backs to push on and create some width.

Thought Spearing was excellent and the new boy Anderson had a great debut so looking forward to seeing him this season, i liked the look of Proctor when he came on as well, he seems more mobile and holds the ball better than Madine

We should have won today but at least we are still unbeaten and top of the table

Buxton has been dire so far. Hopefully he's just a bit rusty and will get better, but virtually his every pass has been turd.
