On his side's slow start…
We got off to a bad start. Our line was too deep, we didn’t win the first ball and we got punished for it.

You make a statement with those first few challenges and we just gave the impetus to them, a team which has come here to waste time and sit back to make it difficult - and then they get a goal lead.

On his side's response to falling behind…
I thought we handled the problems they gave us, in terms of sitting deep behind the ball really well, and were very positive in a lot of aspects of our play.

You always want to take three points in every game and the only annoyance I've got with us today was that at the start of the game.

But after that we were excellent. We played really well and had 63% of possession. 23 attempts to their three and goal line clearances – we couldn’t do much more to win the game.

I was delighted with the performance. I thought we were excellent. Some of the football we played was great. The new lads all looked good. We’re disappointed we didn’t win but there are a lot of good signs out there.

On opponents Southend United...
Phil Brown was always going to set his team up to do himself credit. It was a big day for him, coming back here.

They gave their all and put their bodies on the line. I’m sure he’ll be delighted with the commitment levels his team have shown.

It was a full-blooded game. Southend have the ability to beat anyone on their day. They raise their game.

They tried to kill the game and waste time. I don’t blame them for that. The referee has to manage that.

And on the performance of debutants Keshi Anderson and James Henry...
We’re very pleased with the new players’ contributions. I thought the lads came in, did well and gave us a bit of quality. James Henry and Keshi Anderson gave us a bit of brightness.

It's never easy when you come in and you've only got Thursday to train, but we didn't train much because they'd all had a long day's travelling. Then only an hour yesterday but they're all intelligent players and I'm pleased with their contributions.
