Phil Parkinson is planning for the future, with two targets already identified ahead of the January transfer window.
The Wanderers boss enjoyed a profitable deadline day in August, securing five players in the space of just a few hours.
But, having seen the club’s perfect start then give way to a winless run that only ended this week in the Checkatrade Trophy victory over Blackpool, Parkinson is now drawing up a new list of potential recruits.
Whether he will be able to act on chief scout Tim Breacker’s work remains to be seen, given the restriction of the Football League’s embargo, but the manager has met with chairman Ken Anderson to discuss their recruitment plans for the winter.
“Me and Tim Breacker had a good chat with the chairman on Monday and discussed where we felt the club was, and what we’ll need to push on,” he told The Bolton News.
“We’re putting those plans in place. We know what we want.
“Tim has put a list of targets together for the chairman and at the moment all we can do is monitor those players.
“Hopefully we’ll get to January and not need anyone. Most squads evolve to a certain degree and we’ve just got to make sure we’re ready.
“Obviously the key for us is numbers because there are still some restrictions in place. Whether that is in place or not in January we’ll have to wait and see.
“But we have a long period now to watch players, speak to agents, and Tim has worked with Ken and Lee (Anderson) to put a good scouting network in place.
“We hope in this window, and certainly for future ones, that it pays dividends.”
Parkinson has been given a handy boost with the news that Max Clayton has been given the go-ahead to resume training with the first team.
Since he signed for Dougie Freedman from Crewe Alexandra the forward’s Wanderers career has been limited by a succession of knee and hamstring problems and, although he featured in the club’s pre-season programme, he has yet to play in a competitive match this season.
The 22-year-old had exploratory surgery in August and has been been cleared to join the squad for training by a knee specialist.
Less welcome for Parkinson was the result of a second scan on Lewis Buxton’s troublesome knee.
After the initial examination proved inconclusive a second opinion showed the full-back has some knee ligament damage.
“Lewis had a further scan and they found some medial damage,” revealed Parkinson. “The first scan we had didn’t show up anything but the second one was more in-depth and found some damage.
“He has been jogging, so it’s not an injury where his knee has had to be braced, or a serious one but there is something there and it’s slightly worse than we thought.
“I think (he will be out) two or three weeks.”
