Phil Parkinson has pleaded with his front men to “stay positive” if they are to end their goal drought against Oldham Athletic.
Zach Clough, Sammy Ameobi, Jamie Proctor and James Henry are waiting on their first league goal of the season – but the Wanderers boss believes breaking the cycle is all a matter of attitude.
The Whites are back on the up after last weekend’s win at Swindon Town and manager Parkinson believes spirits are high as they welcome the Latics for a league game for the first time in 20 years.
“There is a psychology involved,” he told The Bolton News. “We don’t want to be so anxious about getting a goal, we need to make sure we keep making the right runs and getting the right connection with the ball when we get the opportunities.
“Most importantly, if we do miss anything then don’t get too down about it. Another chance – as we’ve seen recently – will come along soon enough.
“Obviously we work on the technical side of things in training and it has been a good week, the spirit among the lads has been excellent. They have been buoyed by the win at Swindon, as you’d expect. We need to stay positive. Our real work day is Tuesday – and I have to say that is probably the best day’s training I have seen from the players since I have been at the club. After that win the lads are in a much more positive place and I think they are in the right frame of mind at the moment.”
Wanderers have no new injury problems and Parkinson believes Henry will get a chance to exorcise the demons of last week at Swindon after returning to training yesterday.
“James had a tightness in his back, going down to the hamstring but he’s trained,” he said. “He should be okay.
“Andy Taylor had an injection in his toe but (Dean) Moxey and (Lewis) Buxton are still out.
“We’ve also taken Chris Taylor back for a week of very hard training because we felt he’d lost a lot over the nine days he wasn’t with us because of illness. He’ll be with us soon.”
