In terms of all round midfield play from non Bolton Paul Scholes is absolutely up there with the best a fact acknowledged by many of the worlds best players, as a pair I don't thing Iniesta and Xavi will be matched, Zidane and Platini were unbelievable players.
Bolton midfielders JJ is the stand out class act, Roy Greaves, Peter Reid, Jason McAteer, Frandsen, in his all too brief time here Holden made a big impression on me, if we can include on loan I'll throw Wilshere in there because he came to us from mighty Arsenal with no airs and graces and gave us 100% from day one.

Good call is that Okocha. Currie is one of my all-time favourites. Blessed with skill but hard as nails and very good at dead ball situations. How he only managed 18 caps is beyond me.
In the same category I rate Bruce Rioch, Terry McDermott ( Great engine ), Jimmy Case, Stan Bowles, Gerry Francis, Don Masson  and Duncan McKenzie

I was there at OT (sorry!) when Blades and Man U played each other as the top two teams in the old first division. Sell-out crowd (but one bloke was stabbed in the queue before kick-off). Best scored a solo wonder goal to go top of the league, but Currie was easily at least his equal.

He was a joy to watch in the year I lived in Sheffield: I was there when, apparently hemmed in by the corner flag, he did a step-over that left one opposition player on his backside and 2 other defenders standing looking silly. He blew kisses to the crowd as he skipped away from all 3.

Also recall the day he outplayed Arsenal's Alan Ball and sat down on the ball for a few seconds to underline his superiority.

Great control and touch, work-rate, heading ability, thunderous shot, dribbling and passing skill combined with awesome vision. Like Zidane, he had it all!

Another two great players of that era albeit wingers rather than out and out midfielders were willie Johnstone at west Brom and Gordon Hill at United.

There were loads of good natural wingers in the 70s and we had Freddie Hill and Gordon "Benny the ball" Taylor. I liked Steve Heighway and George Best of course - but my favourite was Celtic and Scotland's Jimmy Johnstone. The first time I saw him play live was when he came on as sub during an international v England at Hampden and he was so tiny I thought one of the ballboys had decided to make an appearance. He was actually 5' 2" and looked even smaller however "Jinky's" dribbling skills were sublime, he scored plenty of goals and made even more.
I love to watch natural attacking wingers with pace, trickery, and a decent cross and shot on them but I'll settle for a wingback in the modern game.

Another one not mentioned who I used to love watch playing was Sasa Curcic, he was a top player on his day

Sasa was excellent on his day. However. we went on to build the team around him, and when he walked out, we were buggered.

Hello Keegan.

No it isn't hard (ooohh err), we've quite a few loans and ex players playing in your league, so it's my duty to visit.  Very Happy

Did you fall over and hit your head while on holiday?
Roy Greaves was our best midfielder by a country mile. Nearly 500 appearances for BWFC before moving to Seattle Sounders and 66 goals. Class act.
+1, the bedrock of the team and a massive job to replace when his boots where hung up.
In fact the only way was down after he finished!?

Another top midfielder who's name cropped up in another article I was reading is Neil McNab, him and Reidy together were like a pair of pitbulls in midfield.
We got him fro Spurs and was a top signing at the time.

Good shout about McNab. An underrated midfielder who also played for Man City. Never got capped for Scotland at international level which is a surprise.
