Wanderers have been left with a king-sized cup headache after another key midfielder dropped out of contention yesterday.
Derik Osede pulled out of training with a back problem which makes him a significant doubt for the Emirates FA Cup first round clash with Grimsby Town tomorrow afternoon.
Josh Vela is suspended and specialists have ruled Jay Spearing out for a month with a torn groin. Academy graduate Alex Perry has now been put on red alert to make only his second senior start.
Phil Parkinson is not 100 per cent sure if he will get permission to name Sammy Ameobi and James Henry against the Mariners, which could further restrict his options.
“It does present problems for us,” he said. “With Josh (Vela) picking up his fifth yellow and being out, Derik Osede has a problem which only surfaced this morning and that makes him a doubt. When you look at all the players we’ve got out we really are down to bare bones.
“We’re working on getting permission for loan players to play but it looks as though there will be opportunities.
“Liam Trotter did great last week, Derik took his chance in the team, Tom Thorpe did too. They have grabbed it with both hands and I’d like to think that can happen again.”
Parkinson is seeking a second opinion on his captain, who pulled out of last weekend’s 3-1 win over Port Vale with a groin strain which was initially passed off as a minor problem.
Tests in midweek showed the problem up to be much more serious than first thought but it is hoped that bruising suffered in the derby victory over Bury may have distorted the results.
“It’s an awkward one with Jay because the injury didn’t look too bad but the scan came back and showed it to be a lot worse than Matt Barrass feels it is when he’s examined him,” the manager explained. “We have to listen to what the specialist has said but we will get it checked again.
“Jay is frustrated and it’s saying four weeks so anything less than that is a bonus. He has been great for us.”
Meanwhile, Under-18s goalkeeper Jake Turner has been selected for the England squad to play against Poland and France later this month.
