Ken Anderson has reiterated that Wanderers are not looking to shed major players in the January transfer window.
The Whites chairman has confirmed player sales are not necessary to fund the club for the rest of the season.
The rumour mill has already started to speculate on the future of top scorer Zach Clough, who is reported to be interesting Premier League Everton, and names like Jay Spearing, Mark Beevers and Josh Vela will also be subject to interest from elsewhere.
Wanderers’ financial situation has been the topic of much debate in the last few weeks but Anderson is hoping to calm fears that Phil Parkinson’s promotion-chasing side could be broken up next month.
“Zach is already on a long contract and we signed Josh Vela to a new one at the start of the season,” he told The Bolton News.
“We have absolutely no intention of selling our best players in January and our players are most certainly not being ‘put up for sale’ as might have been claimed elsewhere.
“We have to be realistic, as any club does, and know that if a really big offer came in – as it did with Rob Holding in the summer – we would have to consider it. But no-one is actively looking to sell, I can assure fans of that.”
Anderson revealed the potential cashflow problems Wanderers could face last week if a funding solution could not be found.
An offer to fund the club 50-50 with co-owner Dean Holdsworth was turned down, prompting him to make an offer to buy the former striker’s 40 per cent stake in the club and go it alone.
Anderson hoped last week that if the matter was resolved quickly he would be able to take up discussions with the Football League over the removal of a transfer embargo which has stood since the end of last year.
A meeting with the league was postponed last Thursday as the deal had not yet gone through – but the chairman insists a dialogue has been maintained. He also confirmed he held “preliminary discussions” with auditors Deloitte about the signing off of overdue accounts for 2015 and “constructive and amenable talks” were held yesterday with BluMarble, the finance company who will ultimately give the green light to his share buy-out.
Anderson said on Thursday that if the embargo was removed Wanderers would look to strengthen their squad in January if the right player became available.
“There are no plans at all to sell first team players in January, quite the opposite,” he told The Bolton News. “January is not an easy month to buy players but if the right people were to become available I think we would like to be in the position to do business.
“Whether that comes to fruition will depend largely on what happens this week.”
His words were interpreted by some as an ultimatum to Holdsworth. But speaking yesterday the chairman insisted they had been taken out of context and that he was referring to the potential removal of the embargo.
“There hasn’t been an ultimatum,” he said. “We are both looking for the best way to fund the club going forward.”
Anderson has also confirmed that the fans’ Q&A – which was postponed at the 11th hour on November 23 – has also been reorganised for Tuesday, December 13.
The session is scheduled to run between 7-8pm and will be held at the Platinum Suite, with all supporters invited to attend.
