News today is that Snapchat could be worth as much as 25 BILLION dollars!!!

Snapchat is basically sending a picture message that once viewed by the recipient then vanish within seconds!

What's that all about then - why bother?

My daughter uses it all the time and so does all her friends - obvious a generation thing but I just don't get the point.

The link below has a good video of an old bloke (similarly trying to understand it) and a young girl who obviously loves it.

I don't get it either. I tried Whatsapp with a darts team but got fed up of the phone constantly going off with some trivial bit of nonsense. The world has gone mad imo.

Whatsapp is different though as it allows you to do video & non video calling, sending pictures and voice messages via wifi or mobile data connection.

The app is free so it can save on call and message allowance although will use some data allowance if using it on a mobile connection such as 3G for example.

It was my daughters birthday a little while back and I took her a couple of bunches of flowers to the house she is sharing with several other young women.

They all made a fuss of her by getting their phones out and taking pictures, so much so that I had to wait to even give my daughter a hug and wish her happy birthday!

Have they never seen flowers before either?

When I then took my daughter out for a meal to celebrate her day, she spent the best part of it sending a snapchatting picture of what she was going to eat.

Has her friends never seen food before?

I know it is the new way of communicating and bonding but how many pictures of food do these youngsters want to see in their lifetimes?

Surely this is only a fad at best?

God help how the world will communicate with itself in the future if not!

Yes, when my daughter lived in student accommodation there were 8 of them, each with their own rooms and a communal room. They did the same.

My daughter told me there was a big argument once and they had it by phone rather than face to face.

I couldn't get my head around it!

Why not just face people and sort out your differences - particularly when they all had to live together for the year?

I don't get snapchat either, I said to my friend when he asked why I don't have it "what's the point of it? All you can do is send photos of trying to make your boring life look somewhat interesting" the only reason he could think of having it is because "you can send the photos but they only exist for 10 seconds and then delete themselves"

The real question is how can a loss making business like this be worth $25billion.
We saw the dot.com bubble in the late 1990s when dot.com type companies shares rose to astronomic and what subsequently turned out to be ridiculous and unsustainable, heights- and then collapsed in a fit of post -traumatic sanity.
Are the values of these businesses ( like Facebook, whatsApp, snapchat and  their ilk) now the start of a new dot.com bubble.

Grab the audience share - which equates to "circulation" or "readership", then make it pay via selling Advertising space. Or sell it to someone who thinks they can make it pay - before they realise that none of the customers are interested in the advertising.

My kids love snapchat, I think its good for the effects, you can make yourself look like a rabbit, Trump etc
