The relief was palpable as we surged past Watford Gap and the game was still on.
Phil Parkinson decided to start with Chris Long and Felipe Morais with Andrew Taylor a late withdrawal, replaced by Dean Moxey.
The crowd was a record for stadium:mk – Obviously they had all come to see the Wanderers! In the first half, we played well, were comfortable and sneaked ahead through Jay Spearing in added time.
The second half was a different story. MK Dons changed tack, grew in confidence and equalised through a poorly defended goal.
This proved to be the only blip as the defence stood up well, even after Lawrie Wilson limped off after our third substitution.
Captain Marvel, Spearing, went to full back and Adam Le Fondre had to cover in midfield.
It wasn’t a great match but in the end it was a hard-earned point against what is an improving side, who were one of the pundits’ favourites for promotion this year.Looking at the week’s dealings, the money from Zach Clough should help keep us afloat and to bring four players in under difficult conditions looks like good work. Only time will tell if it was.
It’s early days and the new players need time to blend in, although that time is precious as we head towards the season’s finale. Felipe Morais impressed on his first viewing. The others should get up to speed quickly as they are used to playing in English football.
So, we look like we might have that bit of extra cover now with players who can come on and change things. On the down side, Lawrie Wilson and Andrew Taylor look like they could be out for a while. All the clubs in League One have played their final cards now, so let’s bring it on and make a real challenge for promotion.
