Wanderers are taking a closer look at Bulgaria international defender Ivan Bandalovski in an effort to solve their defensive problems.

The 30-year-old former Partizan Belgrade full-back is a free agent and will spend a week on trial with Phil Parkinson’s squad in an effort to win a contract.

The Whites were already light on cover at the back before the weekend’s 1-1 draw with MK Dons but now face a real test after Lawrie Wilson (hamstring) and Andy Taylor (groin) picked up injuries.

It is not yet known how long the two players will spend out of commission or whether Lewis Buxton will be cleared for a first team return after undergoing injections to solve a long-running back problem.

Parkinson is having to explore his options and could offer lifelines to two of the Macron’s forgotten men this weekend against Walsall.

Dean Moxey had not made a league start since October when he stepped in as a late replacement for Taylor at Stadium:mk and Dorian Dervite – who has not made a competitive start of any kind for 12 months – could also feature in the squad.

Bandalovski has spent much of his career in Bulgaria with Litex, Lokomotiv Sofia and CSKA but also had a short time with Feyenoord and recently played in Belgium for Leuven, and Serbia with Partizan.

He speaks English and has 16 international caps to his name, including an appearance against England in Sofia in 2011 during the Euro qualifiers.

The defender’s last game was in May last year, however, so Parkinson and his staff are keen to examine his fitness and conditioning before making any decision.

Wanderers chairman Ken Anderson confirmed on the official website yesterday that the club would be looking to fill the remaining space in Football League quota with a defender.

Parkinson remains practical about the chances of finding a suitable, out-of-contract player at this stage of the season.

“There is another spot to fill but a very limited number of players around who fit the bill,” he told The Bolton News. “The likelihood of getting anyone in is reasonably slim, even though we’ll have a good go at it. Bringing someone in for the sake of it does not make sense.”
