Josh Vela reckons there are plenty more magic moments to come in Wanderers’ promotion push.
Fresh from his 10th goal of the season to kill-off a resilient Oxford United in front of the TV cameras in midweek, the midfielder has set his sights on a fifth straight victory at Shrewsbury Town tomorrow.
Phil Parkinson’s side are four points clear of Fleetwood Town, who go to in-form Bury, and now contemplating whether ground can be made up on league leaders Sheffield United, who visit Oldham Athletic.
Vela believes anything is still possible if the Whites can maintain their focus.
“We can get ahead of ourselves, it’s Shrewsbury at the weekend and we need a result there. But we’re flying at the minute,” he told The Bolton News.
“We have got a great team spirit. A few weeks ago the manager said there were 12 cup finals, now we have done four and won all of them. We need to keep going and who knows where it takes us?”
Scoring deep into stoppage time at the Kassam Stadium and celebrating in front of the 500-plus travelling army of supporters ranks alongside the greatest moments of the 23-year-old’s footballing life to date.
But Vela admits to earn promotion with the club who nurtured him from the age of seven would surpass anything that has gone before.
“That’s definitely the best moment, up to now, in my Bolton career,” he reflected. “Oxford were just getting on top in the game, so to kill it off was a great moment. If we went up – that would be better. No doubt.
“I don’t know when the last time I scored 10 goals in a season was. I’m quite a good finisher but as long as we win I’m not bothered.
“I’ll put the ball in the back of the net but as long as we’re playing well. I do fancy myself for top scorer now.”
Vela did gain some negative attention a few weeks ago for an incident in a local restaurant, resulting in club disciplinary action.
He is keen to put that behind him and ensure people are talking about him for the right reasons.
“I apologise for what happened but I want to move on now and we’ve won four games since then,” he said. “I’ll let my football do the talking and the fans have been great with me.”
