Gary Madine is likely to be back in action for Wanderers tomorrow night as they head to face Phil Brown’s Southend United.

The striker sat out the 0-0 draw with Chesterfield with a thigh injury but Phil Parkinson is hopeful he will be involved again at Roots Hall.

The game was originally scheduled for January but postponed because of a frozen pitch. Now, Parkinson is hoping his side can take advantage of a game they hold in hand on most of their promotion rivals.

“There’s six games to go now and we have to regroup,” he said after the Chesterfield stalemate.

“I think Gary will be back for Tuesday, which will be good for us, and it should be a terrific night at Roots Hall.

“We have a game in hand on some of the teams up there and this is it on Tuesday. We go down there on a good run and we need to continue it.”

Wanderers appeared to miss Madine’s physical presence up front but Parkinson reckoned the Spireites’ tactical approach also made it difficult to get replacement Chris Long into the game.

“Longy needs space in behind and they came here, sat deep and made it difficult to get the service in for him,” he said. “He’s a player we’ve seen recently on our travels that when teams are pushing on to you he can exploit the space in behind. We could never really give him the service he wanted.

“Max Clayton did well when he got on and showed a couple of bright moments, which was a positive for us.”
