The latest leg of our grand promotion tour took us to the flatlands of North Lincolnshire for a sunny afternoon in Scunthorpe.

We happened upon a quaintly-named establishment called Take A Gander – and so we did and were rewarded with a superb fry-up lunch for our investigations.

Then it was on to a tired-looking Glanford Park.

Although it is less than 30 years old, it has a feel of a ground much older and the view from behind the goal was poor.

Indeed, we all thought Max Clayton had scored from a header as we couldn’t see their goalkeeper, Joe Anyon, tip it round the post.

Phil Parkinson brought in Conor Wilkinson to fill the gap left by Gary Madine.

Otherwise we were unchanged from Tuesday night’s fantastic performance and result.

The fans turned out in force and we were up for it, creating a great atmosphere. Unfortunately, the team weren’t up for it and put in a tired looking performance, especially in the first half.

Our midfield looked sluggish and our attack was ineffective against a massed Irons defence.

They weren’t afraid to pull 11 men back to defend every set piece.

They nicked a goal early on from a well-taken curling free kick and were content to hit us on the break.

We improved a little in the second half but couldn’t get that important equaliser and in the end the result was fair.

We need to put this defeat behind us and come out fighting at Oldham.

Ironically, despite our poor result, our chances of promotion improved. We confirmed our place in the play-offs at the very least and now we need only six points rather than nine to go up automatically.

It is still very much in our hands and two wins from our last four matches will see us home.

We’ll have fantastic support at both away matches with more than 4,000 at Oldham Athletic and Port Vale.

I have fond memories of a trip to Port Vale for our last away match in 1973, when John Byrom equalised in injury time to clinch the Division Three title.

Here’s hoping that Vale Park will be a similar place of celebration this season.
