Phil Parkinson met with Ken Anderson in London yesterday to discuss how to bring stability back to Wanderers’ wage structure.

The Whites boss sat down for talks with his chairman to co-ordinate offers for players who are out of contract and speak about potential targets this summer.

Parkinson wants a “balanced” squad after promotion to the Championship but is aware the budget for recruitment this summer will not be anything like that enjoyed by some of his predecessors at the Macron.

“It’s about getting the right wage structure in place,” he told The Bolton News. “The chairman and myself and anxious to bring the budget under control and make sure whatever problems there were in the past don’t happen again.

“It is important we get the levels right. I’ve done a lot of research into what clubs in the Championship who are comparable with us are spending on their players, so we have to be fair too.

“I want to get a balance back in the squad, so there are plenty of decisions for us to make.”

Parkinson will meet with several more out-of-contract players at the start of next week, after which the club are expected to release an update on their retained list.

Conor Wilkinson was told he was free to speak with other clubs and Liam Trotter, Tom Walker, Reece Wabara, Will Jaaskelainen and Lewis Buxton were told their contract would not be renewed earlier this week.

The futures of Max Clayton, Lawrie Wilson, Dean Moxey, David Wheater, Gary Madine, Jay Spearing, Dorian Dervite, Mark Davies and Filipe Morais have yet to be confirmed.

Others, such as Andrew Taylor, Jem Karacan, Adam Le Fondre and James Henry, all free agents in June, are also up for discussion.

But Parkinson is keen to reinforce the message Wanderers cannot risk their financial future by splashing out the same sort of cash they did previously on wages.

“I think we have to be sensible,” he said. “There will be players who want to stay at Bolton and who we want to keep but the money we spend has to be right for the long term future of the club.”
