On progressing into the next round…
I am very pleased to get through. We knew it would be a difficult game as I came to see them at the weekend and they fielded the same team tonight.
There was a good cohesion about their side which you would expect. We made changes ourselves to protect players who had played on Sunday and who will likely play again this coming Saturday.
We wanted to give a lot of players some much-needed minutes too, but even taking everything into account, we still came here with the intention of wanting to get through and we are pleased that we managed to do that.
On Derik scoring his first goal for the club…
I’m really pleased for Derik. He’s waited throughout pre-season for his chance and he couldn’t have done more than score the winning goal.
I thought he grew into the game, like many of the players who were experiencing their first competitive action of the season, and we’re happy with that.
On Adam Armstrong opening his account…
It’s always pleasing when your strikers are scoring and I felt Adam got better as the game went on.
The goal showed a typical kind of movement from him and it was a great ball from Will Buckley who I’m also pleased for as his energy tonight was a different class.
We know when he gets in those positions that he can create quality and as a wide player, getting assists next to your name is important.
On Filipe Morais’ return to the mix…
It’s been frustrating for everybody, especially Fil, that he’s missed most of pre-season and we’re going to have to filter him back in like we did tonight.
We’ll see how he is in the morning first, but he’s an important player, he can make things happen and his set-piece delivery is right on the money which won us the game tonight.
On the three debutants…
I thought Antonee put in an outstanding performance. Everybody knows that a wing-back is a physically demanding position and he drove the team on from that position.
He showed a really good attitude, so I was really pleased with his contribution.
On the performance of Ben Alnwick…
Keepers always want clean sheets and although he didn’t get that tonight, he did very well.
Ben’s a very good keeper and it’s a close call between our two goalkeepers, as our supporters well know.
On Jack Earing’s efforts…
Jack put in a very mature performance tonight – he’s an old head on young shoulders.
He was very calm in possession and I can’t remember him giving the ball away. His performance is another boost for our academy, the fact that he’s come in tonight and not looked at all out of place.
On the travelling support…
They were brilliant, absolutely brilliant. It was important that we got a win tonight for them. I said to the lads beforehand that I didn’t enjoy the feeling of getting beat at the weekend. None of us enjoyed Sunday night or the days that have followed.
When you’re in this industry, you know that you’re going to have to work very hard to get those victories and we’ve done that tonight with our quality prevailing.
And finally, on the challenge of Millwall at the weekend…
We’ve got a bit of time now to think carefully about the right team for the weekend, but if we show the same application then as we did in the second half tonight, then we will give Millwall a great game.
It’s a place that we’ve had success at before and hopefully we can produce that on Saturday.
