Phil Parkinson hopes a fit-again Josh Vela and Sammy Ameobi will breath some fresh life into Wanderers’ Championship campaign.
The Whites are desperate for a pick-me-up after setting all manner of unwanted records in a winless start to the season.
Encouraging performances against Ipswich, Bristol City and Aston Villa have not yielded any points but Parkinson believes there is light at the end of the tunnel as two of his big-hitters return to full fitness.
Ameobi started his first game at Villa Park but was withdrawn after an hour as a safety precaution and Vela got through his first full training session on the Friday before the international break.
Sheffield Wednesday come to town this weekend to face a Whites side anxious to get off the mark in the league.
“It will be important to get those two back out there and fully fit,” he told The Bolton News. “We gave Sammy an hour because he only really had that game time in him. It was key we didn’t get him injured again irrespective of the way the game was going.
“He’s had 60 minutes and now it’s a case of taking that forward and getting him more time in the games coming up.
“Josh has been champing at the bit. He has time to get himself up to speed now.
“You don’t want to harp on about injuries because the fans don’t want to hear it – but when you are missing key players like Josh in a small squad, it does have a big impact.”
Vela has been out of action since damaging ankle ligaments against Leeds United on the opening day of the season.
The academy graduate scored 10 goals from midfield in League One last season and is integral to Parkinson’s plan to strike the right balance between attack and defence.
“It’s always been about getting those structures right,” he said. “I was happy with the shape of the team against Aston Villa and I thought we looked an attacking threat too. Sammy, Gaz (Madine) and Adam (Armstrong) had chances.
“Josh was a central figure for us last season and it does give us options.”
