Phil Parkinson praised his battle-weary Wanderers after picking up a first Championship victory, then warned: “You’ve got to go again!”
Fans had waited a long time to celebrate three points but after edging a thrilling contest against Sheffield Wednesday the Whites boss was not looking to milk the applause.
QPR come to the Macron on Saturday and Parkinson is demanding the same high standards as the survival fight continues.
“That was one hell of an effort,” he said after Sammy Ameobi’s superb 10th minute strike and an own goal from Sam Hutchinson had earned a 2-1 win over the Owls. “I’m pleased for the players, I’m obviously happy for myself but most of all for the supporters because they have been great with us despite the really, really tough time we’ve had. They deserved that win.
“Football is about sticking together. We did that and we’ve reaped the reward.
“But I said to the lads right away in the dressing room we don’t stop there. It’s right back on the training ground to go again.”
A game of gilt-edged chances, goal-line clearances and high tension was in the balance right up to the final whistle.
But the relief at ending a 12-game wait for league victory was etched on Parkinson’s face as his side moved on to five points for the campaign, still six off safety.
He said after the game: “When the fourth official put six minutes up I thought ‘come on, give us a chance!”
“It went right to the wire but I just kept looking at the ref and willing him to blow the whistle.
“I’m happy for everyone, not just myself. It has been a really, really tough run but hopefully now we have got players back and this result under our belts it can improve from here, with hard work..
“Sheffield Wednesday are one of the fancied teams who’ll be expected to be right up there because of the array of talent they’ve got. But we showed, as we did against Ipswich and Villa, that we can create. The difference is a couple ended up in the back of the net.”
