Wanderers will hope an old transfer target does not come back to haunt them this weekend in the shape of Ipswich Town winger Bersant Celina.

The Kosovo international appeared to be on the verge of a six-month loan deal at Bolton in the summer, admitting the Macron looked a “good fit” after getting a guided tour of the facilities.

Celina was touted around the Championship by his parent club Manchester City but when Wanderers hesitated, Mick McCarthy stepped in to agree a deal to take the creative midfielder down to Portman Road.

He has already proved a thorn in Bolton’s side, inspiring the Tractor Boys to a 2-0 win over the Whites at Portman Road in September. Back then he had struggled to hold down a first team position but ever since, the 21-year-old has become a regular, scoring eight goals – including the winner against Leeds United at the weekend.

Ipswich come to Bolton four points off the play-off spots and with McCarthy purring over Celina’s recent form.

“You can’t give it to players, you can’t coach that,” he said at the weekend.

“I did say to him ‘you’re the match-winner, you’ve got to be a matchwinner in a game like this’.”

“He’s just got that je ne sais quoi, whatever it is,” McCarthy told BBC Radio Suffolk.

“He works his socks off, but that stuff that he produces is God-given and practiced.

“We have to drag him off the (training) pitch, seriously - we play a lot of games, it’s a physical league, and when we’ve trained he always has the ball at his feet.”

TBF Celina's goal against Leeds was a screamer. Very dangerous player.
