The salaries that Fat Sam (and subsequent managers) paid out created the debt which is why we can't splash to save our asses this time.
Youri was paid a fortune, but at least we survived (just) that season.
I'm pretty confident OC has been told to slash the salary bill so if you 're razzed off with that the object of your ire should be the owners and not OC.
I don't go for this theory that Coyle has had no money to spend. Ok, not as much as Megson by any means but he's wasted £4m on Ngog, £2m on Wheater who he only plays when he's forced to, a couple of million on two donkeys from Burnley and millions in wages on the likes of Pratley & Petrov. Not to mention the big money loan signings who warm the bench.
Coyle out.
See what you're saying, but...
The market is pretty much stitched up these days and we are priced out in terms of established players whilst young players are already signed up to Manure et al so all that's left are loanees and "players with potential" - or Americans.
I don't understand the Petrov signing, but Pratley and N'Gog were both reasonably priced punts on players who might be able to come good - they haven't as yet but that was the gamble. And it is a gamble. I can't think of a single player of that age and in that price bracket who I could practically guarantee would be prem quality.
Mears and Eagles are squad players and not overpriced as far as I can tell.
The loanees is not a bad plan. Wilshere and Sturridge worked out fine so it was hoped that Kakuta and Boyata would too - but they didn't as yet (although Boyata looked OK at CB and should be given another chance there)
But in terms of actually buying players that can make the grade, it's an impossible market on (what appears to be) OCs budget. Either we look (like everyone else) at the lower leagues and hope to get an undiscovered talent (I think Grimmer will turn out to be a bargain for Fulham) or we go abroad and hope that the brich clubs have left a stone unturned.
Fact is that IF Boyata and Kakuta had worked out as well as Wilshere and Sturridge did, IF Pratley and N'Gog started to realise their potential and IF we hadn't had all those awful injuries, we'd be up the league and OC would be a genius.
Point is with the market the way it is and with every player claiming to be worth a fortune OC has no choice but to take a gamble on promising players - and so far he hasn't been repaid for the confidence he has shown in them.
