Phil Parkinson reckons a fired-up Sammy Ameobi can lead Wanderers from the front in this weekend’s derby clash with Preston.
The former Newcastle United man has started in a central role in the Whites’ attack over the last few games and – in his manager’s opinion – is becoming a more influential figure inside the dressing room.
Ameobi’s impressive will to win helped secure a point at Norwich City at the weekend and, says Parkinson, will rub off on the rest of the squad.
“You can see Sammy wants to win,” he told The Bolton News. “I’ve had a good chat with him about becoming a bigger influence in the group.
“Obviously because of his talent players look up to him but more and more in the dressing room he’s one of many geeing the lads up and demanding more, higher standards. That’s the next part of Sammy’s development.
“We need that from everyone. That attitude has been first class and we’ll need it again in what will be a very competitive game against Preston.”
Wanderers chairman Ken Anderson confirmed this week that the club is in talks with two senior players about a new deal for next season.
Ameobi is one of 13 first team regulars whose deal expires in the summer and his impact since arriving on a free transfer in the summer would suggest he could be at the top of the list for an extended contract.
The 25-year-old has made 28 appearances this season and has already played more minutes in this campaign than any other in his career. His four goals is also a career-best, and since the departure of Gary Madine, he is now Bolton’s current top scorer.
Parkinson has given some of his players extended rest time this week to recuperate after playing six games during February alone.
“It has been relentless,” said the Wanderers boss. “A good week on the training ground is important for a few of the lads, others will need a little bit of rest and they have earned it. But we’ll be looking forward to Preston, it’s a terrific game.”
