Phil Parkinson wants to focus on Wanderers’ survival battle, rather than the raft of players coming out of contract in the summer.
Twenty senior and development squad players could walk away for nothing at the end of the season, including fan favourites Sammy Ameobi, David Wheater and Filipe Morais.
Ken Anderson revealed he has opened talks with “several” first teamers and Parkinson is happy to leave negotiations in his chairman’s hands.
“That’s all down to the chairman,” he told The Bolton News. “I want to concentrate on what I have to do to prepare the team.
“There are one or two players we’ve got options on, others who are out of contract. Me and Ken had a meeting about that a couple of weeks ago, so him and Paul Aldridge are getting on with it. Me and the backroom staff have to keep our eye on our overall aim, which is to stay in this division right now.”
Changes to the transfer window will alter the way Parkinson does business this summer, with permanent deals now no longer allowed after the start of the competitive season.
Wanderers’ scouting network have already started to identify players who can improve the squad but they will need to move quicker than they have in the past, admits the Bolton boss.
“It will all change again in the summer,” he said, “Once the season is finished I think we’ve got to be ready to implement and get players in slightly quicker than we have done before. The changes the EFL have made bring everything forward.”
Anderson has hinted Wanderers’ improving league form could pave the way for more contracts to be offered before the close of the campaign.
“A number of players will be out of contract at the end of the season and new contract discussions with several of them and their agents are already taking place,” he said. “Others will follow and I will not forget the fantastic job they have done in getting us into this position where our fate is under our own control. There is an old adage about players playing for their contracts and this is very much the case.”
