Right,I'm off down the pub. Not.

Looking at this piece on the BBC website this morning got me thinking.

Is the local pub finished?

I rarely step through the doors of a pub these days,due,mainly,to the racket that assails my ears when I do.

They're far from relaxing places these days,and I'm much happier,feet up,in front of the telly,with a nice bottle of Samuel Adams.

There are only 3 pubs in staggering distance from my house (which is 3 more than where I lived previously) and I visit them at least weekly. All have a great atmosphere with loads going on and lots of regulars we have a bit of banter and a laugh with. One is a gastro pub with ample provision for locals and the others have bands on at weekends, BBQs in the summer, pool and darts teams, quizzes, SKY for footie and rugby etc and they all get involved in the numerous town street events. Only downside is the cost as we're in a tourist area and a pint of bitter is around £4.50 in the most expensive (and nearest) one, with wine up to £8.30 for a large 250 ml glass. Norfolk is a bit like going back in time, but the upside is that the pub is still a social/community centre. Much prefer that to shitty clubs and the death of local pubs which here at least, remain central to the community. There is also a Legion for snooker and cheap drinks and unlike others I've been to, anyone is welcome if you pay the £3 annual membership subscription. Personally, I'm a big fan of local pubs providing they're run in the right way.

I don't get the chance to go out to pubs much these days but still enjoy going to pubs when i can. It seems there are now more specialist craft beer type places opening now and the traditional pub is on the way out.
Pubs are closing at an alarming rate and it is sad but the price of a pint in a pub to what you can buy to drink at home is the main reason i think. In Manchester the price of a pint is at least £4 and in the centre generally a fiver which is way too much.

Is it the Kingsway pub you mean? On the roundabout at the bottom of Kingsway? If so i live nearby but the pub shut about 2 weeks ago. It's being converted into flats i'd heard.
It never seemed very busy and i hadn't been in it at all to be honest.

I'd be more bothered that wanderlust seems to know where you live.

I stopped going to our local pub in Rammy for two reasons:
a) the noise was deafening with crap music being played too loud and fruit machines buzzing and clanging away,and
b) after I had a couple of pints I was up twice a night for a piss. Old age means weak bladders and men drinking wine in public in Rammy has you earmarked as a ponce.

I fondly remember the Boars Head in Churchgate where as a younger man I'd have a bellyful eight nights a week,

That's the one. Spit and sawdust when it was open, but always a quid a pint cheaper than anywhere else. Spit and sawdust now if they're converting it to flats I guess.
