ALAN HOUGHTON'S FAN'S VIEW: A bad day at Leeds made worse by off-field trouble

Hundreds of fans missed the kick-off at Elland Road after a serious accident blocked the M62, causing big delays on the few alternative Pennine crossings.

We were lucky as we entrusted our transportation to Northern Rail and only had to endure standing all the way to Leeds, packed in like sardines.

For lunch, we found Whitelocks, licensed in 1715 and described by John Betjeman as ‘The very heart of Leeds’.

He knew what he was talking about as the steak and ale pie over which we debated our chances was excellent.

We felt a point was surely on the cards after our recent upsurge in form and Leeds United’s bad run.

We got the bus shuttle from the station to Elland Road to find long queues to get in. We got in just in time to see Leeds catch us napping with an early goal from Caleb Ekuban.

It was the worst possible start as we don’t score that many goals and if the defence has an off-day we are going to struggle.

Despite Karl Henry and Darren Pratley being out injured, we matched Leeds except in the final third.

Pablo Hernandez caught us napping again at the start of the second half and although Adam Le Fondre pulled one back, we didn’t deserve to get anything from this match.

In truth, Ben Alnwick kept us in it with a couple of great saves. The support from the Wanderers fans inside the ground was brilliant but we were unable to lift the team to a better performance.

Both of their goals came from defensive errors and there was a distinct lack of creativity when we crossed the half-way line.

At this stage of the season, there is no time to dwell on a bad result. We must bounce back in our next match and who better to do that against but one of our relegation rivals, Birmingham City.

It’s a must-not-lose match, where a win would go a long way to securing our Championship status and a defeat will set the nerves jangling.

Sadly, I heard reports the away designated pub, the Drysalters, had to be closed by the police before the match after trouble had broken out.

Regrettably, there was also a report that a wall memorial at Elland Road had been damaged by Bolton fans.

A crowdfunding campaign has been started to pay for the damage and, hopefully, go some way to restoring our good name.
