We hit the M6 in appallingly gloomy conditions with the mindset to restore some pride at Derby.
Over pizzas and Brooklyn lager at Frankie and Benny’s, we failed to find any cause for optimism as our record against Derby County is abysmal.
It’s more than 30 years since we last won there but we were hoping for a reaction after our wretched performance against Birmingham on Tuesday night, while Derby County would be looking to atone for their spectacularly bad result against Sunderland in their last home match.
Changes were expected, and Phil Parkinson reverted to five at the back with recalls for Jem Karacan, Mark Little, Antonee Robinson, David Wheater and Aaron Wilbraham.
It only took five minutes to see which way this game was going as Alex Pearce was allowed a free header from a corner for the hosts.
It was game over just after the half-hour mark as Matej Vydra poked the second in.
When Tom Lawrence added the third, 10 minutes into the second half, it was a case of keeping the score down to protect our goal difference.
The Bolton fans had lost the will to live by this time and resorted to humorous chants to lighten the mood. ‘Next goal wins’ and ‘We’re going to score in an hour’ were amongst the best.
The Wanderers responded with a late flurry on goal, but it was too little, too late.
We’ve hit another bad run at completely the wrong time to do it.
We’ve lost three on the trot now and any confidence we had built up seems to have entirely evaporated. We’re struggling to get the basics right and mistakes are costing us dearly.
The lack of creativity in the team is frightening. We’ve only got five matches left to save our season and improve our chances of some decent investment.
I don’t know where the points are going to come from, looking at our current form.
We’re probably looking at needing seven points to keep us safe and next up is the current form team in the Championship, Millwall.
We’ve got two away matches against our relegation rivals with a home match against the champions-elect, Wolves, sandwiched in between, before the final home match against Forest. No pressure there then!
When the going gets tough, the tough get going. It’s a time for heroes. Come on Phil, you need to find those heroes for us now.
