On all the time but i do switch it off and on again on occasion when the wifi speeds seems to drop a bit.

The general recommendation these days, particularly if you are on fibre, is to leave the router on at all time.
BT's fibre line management system is particularly sensitive to powering your router off - all it sees is a dropped connection which it thinks could be a potential fault. With ADSL the occasional power cycle doesn't make much difference, but should not be done excessively (so overnight no problem).
But turn off whilst on holiday. In general no specific worries about malware, hacking etc. as they are initiated via your pc, which you can switch off at any time anyway.
