Nottingham Forest did Wanderers a massive favour in their relegation fight by beating Barnsley at the City Ground tonight.
Phil Parkinson was in the stands at the City Ground to see first-half goals from Lee Tomlin and Ben Brereton set up a comfortable advantage for the home side.
Barnsley fought hard for a goal to get themselves back into it but their resistance was killed off by Apostolos Vellios’s late strike to leave the Tykes two points adrift in the bottom three, with all the protagonists now having played 44 games.
Wanderers would now make themselves safe by winning in their penultimate game at Burton Albion on Saturday, provided Barnsley fail to beat Brentford at home.
Victory over the Brewers would also consign them to League One football next season.
Parkinson’s side face Forest on the final weekend of the season and may yet need something to keep them out of the bottom three.
Birmingham and Reading, both currently three points ahead of Wanderers, could also fall into the mix on the final day if they fail to get results against QPR and Ipswich, respectively, and others pick up points.
