PHIL Parkinson has put a top quality striker to the top of his summer shopping list – but will not be pursuing long-term target David McGoldrick, for now.
Wanderers are pursuing a clutch of potential signings, including Walsall’s playmaker Erhun Oztumer, and appear to be reserving the bulk of their available spending power to bring in a front man.
Reports had strongly suggested Parkinson would resume his chase for Ipswich Town goal-getter McGoldrick, who was subject to a failed £500,000 bid in January but could now be available for nothing.
But sources inside the Macron claim the Wanderers boss has now cooled his interest in the 30-year-old and he is now looking elsewhere for the time being.
Republic of Ireland international McGoldrick suffered a torn groin tendon in February which curtailed his season and effectively triggered his exit at Ipswich, where he has scored 46 goals in 159 appearances in the last five years.
At one stage he was a £7million target for Premier League Leicester City and was one of the first players Parkinson looked to at the end of January after losing Gary Madine to Cardiff City.
That deal, along with another cash bid for Charlton’s Josh Magennis and a loan bid for Reading’s Joseph Mendes, were scuppered by the deadline day clock. A late double loan was agreed with Nottingham Forest for old boy Zach Clough and Tyler Walker – but neither made much of an impression in the final few months.
Adam Le Fondre is now the only senior striker guaranteed to be at the Macron next season, although Aaron Wilbraham – the man whose memorable header secured Championship status on the final day – is also being considered for an extra year.
Meanwhile, Wanderers have confirmed the first pre-season friendly of their summer schedule will take place at Morecambe on Tuesday, July 17 at the Globe Arena.
Further friendlies are expected to be announced later this week, at least one of which will be played outside the UK.
