CLAYTON Donaldson has picked up a groin injury which puts him in doubt for the season opener at West Brom on Saturday.
Phil Parkinson was hopeful at the weekend that the problem picked up late in the 2-0 win against Peterborough would not be a serious one for his summer signing.
Donaldson has featured heavily in pre-season and played at the top of the Wanderers’ attack at the ABAX Stadium, with Adam Le Fondre in support.
Parkinson had intended to use the game as a dress rehearsal for West Brom but could now be forced into a change of plan.
Josh Magennis is expected to complete his move from Charlton Athletic early this week, which could mean the Northern Ireland international is plunged straight in for his first start.
Players who do not start at the Hawthorns are likely to play in the Carabao Cup first round against Leeds United next Tuesday.
“We’ll see with Clayton but hopefully it is not a serious issue,” he told The Bolton News. “We have worked on a couple of different shapes and different personnel over the summer, especially in the Girona and Peterborough games, so I think we’ll need everyone to be fit and ready. Those who don’t play at West Brom will do in the cup.”
