Phil Parkinson said last Friday he was expecting to add competition for Ben Alnwick early this week and it is understood the 33-year-old Cardiff City keeper was poised to fill the role.

But plans broke down on Monday when Camp – who was in the process of cancelling his contract with the Premier League Bluebirds – was offered a two-year deal in the Midlands plus the promise of regular football.

Birmingham boss Garry Monk has side-lined senior keepers David Stockdale and Tomasz Kuszczak and played youngster Connal Trueman in the weekend’s draw with Norwich City.

Wanderers have already identified their next target and hope to have his signature secured by the time they face Bristol City at the weekend.

Parkinson had looked set to sign ex-Colchester keeper Sam Walker for most of the summer until he cooled on the idea, leaving the 26-year-old to sign for Reading.

Academy coach Ben Williams was registered to sit on the bench at West Brom at the weekend while Parkinson has also confirmed he plans to send Jake Turner out on loan during this season.

Parkinson is also on the lookout for a left-back, a striker and a central midfielder before the transfer window closes at the end of the month.

Ipswich Town’s Joe Garner remains a target and Bolton’s chances may have been boosted with the news Paul Hurst’s side are close to adding Accrington Stanley’s Kayden Jackson to their attacking ranks.

Meanwhile, Connor Hall scored a hat-trick for Wanderers in a behind-closed-doors friendly victory against Oldham Athletic yesterday.

Dennis Politic added the fourth in what was a strong Bolton team including first-teamers such as Erhun Oztumer, Marc Wilson, Jack Hobbs and Mark Little. Stephen Ireland - tipped to make a trial appearance - did not feature.
