The Wanderers boss watched two key men slip through the net in the permanent window as he was out-bid for Charlie Wyke and Joe Garner by Sunderland and Wigan Athletic, respectively.
But with the loan window still there to be used until August 31, Parkinson has vowed to redouble his efforts and ensure he does not end up empty-handed again.
“Every manager in the Championship has said he’s looking to add to his squad. It is going to be very competitive and I’m not sure there’s enough to go around,” he told The Bolton News.
“We are still three or four players short. But I am confident we’ll add some quality over the next few weeks.
“I’m pleased with the way the new lads have settled here and the start to the season we’ve made but we know we have got to add in key areas of the team. I’m focussed on getting them.”
Parkinson confirmed Wanderers’ interest in MK Dons’ Chuks Aneke and wrapped up the signing of Norwich City keeper Remi Matthews yesterday on loan, with a view to buy in January.
Speaking after a 2-2 draw against Bristol City in which his one cash signing this summer, Josh Magennis, netted his second goal in as many games, Parkinson insists his shortlist of players are all attainable.
“You have to be realistic,” he said. “The list of players we gave Ken Anderson in the summer were all realistic targets.
“I never asked to get Wayne Rooney when he was leaving Everton and wanted £60,000 a week.
“They were ones I thought we could get. We did Josh Magennis, not some of the others, but we are still working towards some top targets.”
Magennis and Will Buckley were on target as Bolton let a two-goal lead slip against Bristol City to end up with a point.
“It’s a good start,” Parkinson said. “A last minute goal last week was fantastic and it would have been great to follow up with three points but we’ll take the result.
“Hopefully we can build on it. We’ll have a game in the cup against Leeds in midweek and then go down to Reading, who have yet to get a point. It’ll be an interesting day.”
