Wanderers agreed with Norwich City to sign the 24-year-old keeper on loan, with a view to making the deal permanent in January.
Having spent much of last season on loan at Plymouth Argyle in League One, Matthews – who had been on the Canaries’ books since the age of 10 - was eager to seize the chance to prove himself at a higher level in the North West.
“It was a tough decision being at Norwich for 14-and-a-half years. It was one I had to sit down with the family and decide what was best for me,” he said. “I think this is the best thing to move my career forward.
“I’ve played in Scotland and in League One – I want to show I’m good enough to play in the Championship, when called upon.
“I wouldn’t have come here if I didn’t think I was good enough. I would have signed at a League One club. To get a game in the Championship would be massive for my confidence.”
Matthews could make his debut at Leeds United tonight, and has 68 career starts under his belt during loan spells with Hamilton, Burton Albion, Doncaster and Plymouth.
“I think being at Norwich for so long, it’s a change for me. Different scenery,” he added.
