The Whites fell to a 2-1 defeat in the Carabao Cup first round against Leeds United on Tuesday evening.
Goals from Patrick Bamford and Samuel Saiz earnt Marcelo Bielsa’s side a place in the second round, with Erhun Oztumer scoring Wanderers only goal on his competitive debut.
When speaking to bwfc.co.uk, manager Phil Parkinson covered these points after the game…
Assessing Tuesday’s performance…
I thought it was a good performance from us, even in the first half.
We were unlucky to be two down and disappointing fact for us was that the second goal.
It was a long throw deep in our half and we committed.
As much as we want to score and get back in the game, we left ourselves open and we need to get better at that.
Leeds have got quality on the counter attack and they showed it tonight, but there are a lot of positives to take out of that.
Players have come in who needed minutes and come into a difficult game but also performed very well.
We got back into the game second half and possibly could have equalised.
We never like getting beat but there is a manner to losing and I am very pleased with what I saw here.
On being pleased with the performance after making ten changes…
I could go through a lot of performances tonight and there is a lot of players who have staked a claim in my eyes to get in the team.
We have three games in seven days coming up and for me, I have no hesitations in playing anyone of those players in the squad at the moment and that’s great rom my point of view.
On playing against a confident Leeds side backed by a strong home crowd…
They are a good side and they do have quality. But when you look at the changes they made, one of those was Patrick Bamford who cost seven million.
We’ve given young Connor Hall his debut and thought he worked his socks off against two very good players at the back.
There was a lot of talk about Leeds at the start of the season, but we’ve had a good one ourselves and I feel we have built on that tonight.
Now, we need to take it into three great games coming up in quick succession.
On Adam Le Fondre leaving the club…
I appeal to all our supporters to respect Alfie’s decision and the club’s decision.
He came to see me yesterday and to be honest with you, it was completely out of the blue.
We signed Remi (Matthews) and (Jonathan) Grounds over the weekend and had a bit of a spring in my step as I walked in.
But Alfie has an opportunity aboard on a three-year contract. It’s an opportunity for him and his family and he’d really like to take it.
It’s difficult to stand in his way. If we did, we’d probably have a disaffected player with us.
We thank Alfie for what he has done. He’s been a good lad, not always started in the team but always been a good professional in and around the building.
But now, we have to make sure that we utilise the saving in Alfie’s wages plus the money we already had prior to the window closing, spend it wisely and make sure we improve the squad.
On now being able to focus more on the Sky Bet Championship…
We came here to win, we’re disappointed we haven’t gone through.
It is a game less in what is a tough schedule coming up, but we would have liked to have gone through.
On Erhun Oztumer’s debut performance and goal…
I am very pleased. If you look at him over the last two years, 17 goals last season with a team down at the bottom.
He’s a very clever player in the number ten role and I thought when we got the ball to him tonight, he looked dangerous, very rarely gave it away and I am pleased for him to get his goal.
He had a bit of a disrupted pre-season, but gradually we’ve seen in training that he’s grown in confidence and that was a good performance from him tonight.
On looking forward to Reading this weekend…
Without a doubt. I feel good after tonight, I have to be honest with you.
There’re players that we have brought in that have quality and have shown just that tonight.
We have some great selection dilemmas going into the weekend, but every player will be playing a part in the next seven days from Reading onwards.
