The striker pulled out of Michael O’Neil’s squad on the eve of Saturday’s 2-1 Nations League defeat to Bosnia and will return to Wanderers for an assessment and treatment.

The injury is not considered serious but it is expected the 28-year-old will miss this weekend’s home game against QPR - which could mean a debut for new signing Christian Doidge.

The former Forest Green front man, signed on loan deadline day, cannot wait to get started in a Bolton shirt.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” he told The Bolton News. “I think the international break came at a decent time for me because it’s enabled me to sort things out, get to know the lads a bit better and generally get settled. But obviously what I really want to do is get my boots on and get out there on the pitch.

“It’s just about sinking in now because the move was a bit mental.

“The thing which really strikes me is when you drive in off the motorway and you can see the stadium. It hits you right between the eyes.

“You come in and think ‘I’ll be playing there’ and it’s quite surreal. It’s a great honour.”

Doidge accepts he is under pressure to deliver goals at his new club.

“I’ve got to forget about all the buzz and get down to business, really,” he said. “I scored goals at Forest Green and that will be expected of me here too. It’s down to me.”

Meanwhile, a group of former Bolton players, including Karl Henry, have asked the PFA for their assistance in solving an ongoing pay dispute with Wanderers owner Ken Anderson.

The midfielder, who is currently without a club, says he was promised payment on Friday but the money was not moved into his account.

Speaking via his Twitter account, Henry defended his decision to go public.

“This regularly happened to others during my time at Bolton. We (the players) put pressure on the chairman internally and made him pay them. All kept in-house. Now we’re not there, he predictably does the same to us.”

Quite happy if Doidge starts, he seems a confident chap.

Same here Nat, he does seem to have a lot of self belief and his record (albeit at a lower level to date) would suggest it's justified. As to Magennis, I knew he'd crock himself. As soon as any BWFC player gets an international call up you know that's going to end in tears.
