Steve Parkin admitted yesterday the 36-year-old wide man still needed some time on the training ground before he would be put into Championship action.

Dyer has been keeping fit with West Brom but has not played competitively since May, when he came on as a substitute in Burton's 2-1 defeat at Preston, which confirmed their relegation.

The EFL could block Dyer's paperwork, which is set to be presented by noon today, if Bolton do not settle their pay dispute with three former players - Karl Henry, Jem Karacan and Derik Osede.

The PFA have been called in to mediate the row and are confident of a swift resolution.

But when asked if Dyer would play tomorrow, Parkin said: "Probably not. He needs to be brought up to speed.

“We know what he’s about. We watched quite a lot of him over the summer.

“He’s a wide player and wing-back who can get goals, seems like a smashing lad and I think he’ll be a good signing for us."

Parkin feels Dyer still has plenty to give for Wanderers despite being one of the oldest active players in the second tier.

“He’s a very fit lad for his age, so I don’t think people should read too much into that," he said. “He’s in good condition. He has trained all week and looked the part. He just needs some 11 v 11 time under his belt before we consider involving him or playing him."
