It seemed a little busier as we approached the stadium, so maybe other season ticket holders had had more success at encouraging friends to come along for £10.

The Doombar deliberations were all about where the next goal is coming from, never mind the next point. We need something to give us a lift and restart the season.

We’ve used up the cushion gained from our good start and against Swansea we were facing dropping into one of the relegation spots.

We got a lift as news came through that Sammy Ameobi was back, replacing the unlucky Craig Noone, with Mark Beevers coming in for David Wheater.

The Remembrance commemorations for the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War were well received and respected by both sets of fans, with an installation of 10 military figures in the South Lower stand, representing those who never returned. It certainly put things into perspective and made us realise that football is only a game.

The game followed an all-too familiar pattern with plenty of effort but a lack of quality where it matters with the final touch. To emphasise the difference between the teams, Barrie McKay scored a cracking goal with an unstoppable shot from outside the box.

We went close with Ameobi smashing one against the bar and screwing another agonisingly inches wide, but we ended up with another nil scoreline. Once again, we put up a decent performance for no reward.

So, where do we go from here? We’ve got the international break to think about it before we go into the Lion’s den at Millwall.

Phil Parkinson talked about the importance of building up partnerships all over the field and that is something there has been little evidence of this season, particularly up front.

Having cover and competition for all places is good in one respect but doesn’t do much for the understanding necessary between players. We’ve got players who can score goals, but their confidence must be ebbing away.

Ameobi’s return did give us a boost and hopefully he’ll get better as he gets match fit.

Whether Stephen Ireland can make a difference remains to be seen. The problem is that not many of the 17 new players brought in this season have established themselves yet.

But we live in hope. Eleven years ago, we drew 2-2 against Bayern Munich. We’ll be back one day.
